The results come after a landmark year for streaming

Roku has breached 70m active accounts globally, which is an increase of 10m year-on-year, with the streaming company also announcing that its global streaming hours were 23.9bn in Q4 – a 19% increase on 12 months before. It boasted 87.4bn streaming hours for the full year.

Anthony Wood, who is the founder and chief executive of Roku, said: “As consumers continue the shift to TV streaming, we’re excited that a growing number of people are taking the journey with Roku and we’re proud to reach this meaningful milestone today.

“Roku is laser-focused on delivering affordable, easy-to-use products and an operating system that makes streaming accessible to all. We look forward to continuing to bring innovative and delightful experiences to more and more viewers this year.”

The results come after a landmark year for streaming, in which Roku is a leader. In the US, streaming overtook cable for the very first time. Back in November, however, Roku showed it wasn’t immune to the cuts sweeping the tech sector, announcing it will let 200 staff go imminently. It aimed to cut staff expenses by 5%.

The company has recently made further inroads into the hardware market with the launch of its own TV line.
